Atanu Dey On India's Development

Satya Sai Baba and the Confederacy of Criminals

Satya Sai Baba is dead. He disproved his own prediction — that he’ll die at age 96 — by kicking the bucket at 86. I suppose Yama Raj, the Lord of Death, didn’t get the memo and came by on his bull when he felt like giving the Baba a call. Anyway, there’s no arguing with Yama Raj (except of course if you are Shiva, who can tell Yama to back off) and he, or perhaps one of his minions — Yamdoots — caught Satya Sai Baba in his noose and off they went to . . . well, we can’t be sure which of the seven narakas he presently resides in. What about swarga, you may ask. Not a snowball’s chance in hell, if you pardon the expression. If cheats were admitted to even the lowest of the seven swargas, what would be the point of it all!

Seriously now, Satya Sai Baba was a small time magician and a big time crook. His magic tricks were pedestrian and transparent that they could only fool very stupid people. He would “materialize” stuff from thin air. Or so he claimed. But he was an inept magician. Too often his palming was so amateurish that I wish he had had the sense to learn a few tricks from professional stage magicians. (This video is an example of his bumbling silly tricks.)

SSB was a sharp businessman, otherwise. He would materialize bibhuti, “holy ash” (although what’s holy about ash that is not holy about everything in the universe escapes me), and generously distribute it to the poor (although how that helps the poor is also not clear to me.) He would materialize gold chains also but these he reserved for the rich. The rich, in turn, would shower him with tons of gold jewelry. So as I was saying, he was a canny businessman. Take in gold by the tons, and then hand a tiny bit of it back to the same rich people after a conjuring trick. The real trick was how he fooled his followers.

SSB died miserable, it appears. I felt sorry for him. He was bedridden and died of multiple organ failures. It is reported that the people looking after him were impatiently waiting for him to die. They could not wait to get their hands on the wealth that surrounded him. It goes to show that however rich and mighty you may be, in the end, when Yama comes around, it is not a pretty sight.

I have had an acute dislike for SSB. That will not come as a surprise if you know how I feel about “godmen” and their shenanigans. SSB deceived, lied and cheated. He convinced millions of his followers that he was a good man when he himself must have known that he was cheating them. That in my books makes him despicable.

He was a crook. Even if you disregard all other evidence of his dishonesty, just consider this fact. He was praised to the high heavens by the most crooked people alive in India today. Antonia Maino aka Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, and dozens of high powered politicians praised him. L K Advani went so far as to say, “I believe that spiritual leaders in our country provide sources of de-contamination, de-pollution….”. I understand the need for “de-contamination and de-pollution” for those who have to deal with so much dirty money and fraud on a national scale. It is clearly a confederacy of criminals — the politicians and fraudsters like SSB — that royally screws the ignorant Indian masses.

They gave him a state funeral. They usually do to crooks and charlatans. Teresa, the Merciless, the repulsive Catholic missionary who hobnobbed with cruel dictators and took money stolen from the poor, got a state funeral too. Criminals hold other bigger criminals in high regard and it shows in how the politicians of India revere the masters of deceit and deception.

What I find disgusting about SSB is that he gives Hindus and Hinduism a bad name. It is not a matter of national shame if an average guy diddles kids but when SSB does it, it is ammunition in the hands of the missionaries (who, I suppose, don’t like competition in their diddling of kids) and other enemies of India and Hindus. SSB was known around the world and when he cheated, that too was well known. By his pathetic lies, he drags down Hinduism because too many people associate Hinduism with people like him.

SSB claimed he was god. Of course, from a Advaita Vedantic perspective, he was god. But then so is everyone else in the universe. अहम् ब्रम्ह. I am Bramha. तत्वम असी. I Am That.

The man was a megalomaniac and his delusions of grandeur extended to believing that he was the god that monotheists believe in and that he had sent his son Jesus to earth. There’s something wrong with claiming that you are god of the monotheistic kind. It is a mental disorder routinely suffered by many in lunatic asylums. He was certifiably crazy. He said,

The statement of Christ is simple: “He who sent me among you will come again!” and he pointed to a Lamb. The Lamb is merely a symbol, a sign. It stands for the Voice—Ba-Ba; the announcement was the Advent of Baba. “His Name will be Truth,” Christ declared. Sathya means Truth. “He will wear a robe of red, a bloodred robe.” (Here Baba pointed to the robe He was wearing!). “He will be short, with a crown (of hair). The Lamb is the sign and symbol of Love.”

Christ did not declare that he will come again. He said, “He who made me will come again.”
That Ba-ba is this Baba and Sai, the short, curly-hair-crowned red-robed Baba, is come. He is not only in this Form, but, he is in every one of you, as the dweller in the Heart. He is there, short, with a robe of the colour of the blood that fills it.

Unbelievable. You cannot make that sort of stuff up. That quote is from a Satya Sai Publications book.

Believing you are Jesus Christ’s father is not all that remarkable. Christians believe in all sorts of crazy stuff and so do lots of people from other religions and cults, and so do the inmates of loony bins. It’s all crazy crap but nothing evil or wrong. What’s wrong with what SSB did was the message he sent out through the grand larceny he practiced with impunity. It says that it is ok to lie and to cheat as long as you give some of the proceeds to charitable causes and if important people support you. Those who are seeking ways to rationalize their criminal behavior see what people like SSB do and it gives them comfort and justification to keep on ripping off people.

SSB is dead but his legacy of cheating and ripping off the poor and the gullible will continue. The League of Extraordinarily Crooked Politicians headed by Manmohan Singh will carry on the job.

You want your website comments to be clean and you yourself will not. In your patent dislike for anything Higher you have ridiculed yourself. Any justification for your shenanigans?

  • Nitin Madan

Hey Dr. Dey, You’ve gotta give him a point or two for his Afro.

  • sr

    Good goood goood – I like…
So apt that crooks admire bigger crooks and this bastard was admired by all the grand crooks of the land especially those who misrule us now …

  • Raam Das

i was never follower of SSB. But his water Distribution Project in AP were commendable. As far as Megic is concern, there is Something called Siddhi’s and For sure he owned some of those.

  • http://www.deeshaa.org Atanu Dey

Venkat, so you do agree that Sathya Sai Baba was a fraud. Because you have not even bothered to address that point. I realize that the proof is too overwhelming for a worshiper to argue against.

Nitin, yes of course, SSB gets full points for the ‘fro.

  • Loknath

    Venkat,

You are reading a perfect description of SSB phenomenon by Atanu. Your outburst at Atanu over this post has probably to do with the fact that like many of the unquestioning followers of Baba, you too are convinced of the story that “Baba did what the leaders didn’t”.

I am pretty certain you would have come across similar stories of Baba (Using capital B because he indeed is Higher than mortal unlike Atanu, you and I) several times in the past. I am sure many people including you would have fully comprehended by now that SSB was a self-professed God man…not just God man but a God. A God who was good at doing business. Anyone subscribing to Baba’s greatness in his full educated conscience is nothing but an epitome of stupidity and psychic delusion. To the ignorant…may the real God enlighten them!

No press or talk show host would ever dare to speak so openly about Baba back in India, esp. after his death for fear of losing their lives the next moment. Indian people in general and leaders in particular are master pretenders. We are ever keen to turn a blind eye to the bitter truths for sake of delusional happiness. We as Indians are all too quick in believing what we have convinced ourselves is worth believing or what was hammered at home and school is worth believing. Baba was nothing more than a good catalyst and a substrate at the same time to help sustain this delusion amongst his followers. This behavior amongst a whole generation of Indians (who never questioned authority) had its trickling effect that has been extremely damaging to our value systems and social motivations. It has made us corrupt and stupid at the same time.

Taking a view aside, probably SSB’s motives were different. Let’s give him a chance. He wanted to raise money and he probably realized very early that the easiest way to raise money to fund ventures (that he did – Atanu your take on this please?) is by making followers believe that he indeed is a God. Donations followed. But like all populist spiritual and religious leaders (including Pope and Ayatollah), he too had his share of black sheep in the audience who are well trained to drill and reinforce Baba’s prowess and special powers to the prospective clientele esp. the rich rural Indians who are eager to make implicit statements of wealth and display of good kindred that they believe can only come from good deeds like donating money for temples, water pumps, trusts and God men’s cause.

One of their (black sheep in the audience) jobs is also to keep at bay certain followers who might have asked intelligent questions that Baba could not convincingly answer using all the metaphysical phrases that we probably was good at. Surely if Atanu would have been a visitor to Puttaparty, his questions would have invited serious repercussions to his physical state (pardon Atanu for slight dramatization).

No wonder Baba’s followers are way larger than any constituency’s vote bank of a single politician or a party. So politicians followed suit. The rich politicians enjoyed the privilege of special one to one appointments with Baba. It would have started with small time local leaders being donors and die hard followers but big leaders followed suit. They can’t be left behind. This is competition after all. No wonder crooked leaders like Antonia, Manmohan, Advani et al aspired to be the ambassadors and correspondents for Baba whenever they found opportunity was worth it. They couldn’t have done without state funeral to Baba. He is forever enshrined as a great man. The Government of Andhra Pradesh with kind permission of their lords might introduce a chapter on Baba’s life in Telugu syllabus. Some devotees may even earn a PhD by doing research on Baba in good light – “Baba’s contributions to the social transformation of Andhra Pradesh”

Look at it this way. Baba’s generous contributions back to society is not Baba’s greatness, it is actually a collective failure of our Government in not being able to build the institutions and facilities that Baba built. God men will thrive in India as long as we have bad leaders and bad Governance. I hope this is not too difficult to comprehend.

  • Apz

And.,.. you chose to write about him after his death! I wonder why!

  • Ravi

Excellent piece of writing. He is dead and gone now but his followers won’t go easily without establishing a new religion and pushing him as God in coming years. Even more miracles to come now…

  • A

    > Baba’s generous contributions back to society is not Baba’s greatness, it is actually a collective failure of our Government in not being able to build the institutions and facilities that Baba built. Well said. Kinda like the Godfather. when the system is rotten, alternate systems with their own vices, emerge. Since they are better than the rotten system, people vote with their feet.

  • Loknath

Absolutely…Its a Godfather thingie..works equally well with ignorant and the literati, peasantry and nobility in a morally, socially and economically corrupt nation state like India.

To leaders like Advani embracing Baba is like making a statement that Baba is mighter than Antonia..a thug from another land similar to India. To Antonia and MMS, following Advani is squaring it off with their ego. They basically want to know from Baba what did Advani reveal to him

  • Jagadish

Wonder what happened to that murder “investigation” that was closed as an internal matter, case unresolved.

Why any rational human being would place his life in the hands of a self-professed godman is beyond comprehension, but then again, most of the followers were semi-literate or power brokers like the two-bit turbaned tinpot leader and his Italian handler with vested interests.

Some things are indisputable though, the man was good at marketing and organisation, just like the other gurus who are peaking now, like Ravi Shankar. Raju was very skilled at sensing the pulse of the moment, playing with people, baiting them, building up the energy, leading them on, and tossing out scraps and morsels at the end. Coming to think of it, pretty much every successful godman follows a similar formula. Some like Raju who cultivate the right people succeed, while others like Nithyananda, who possibly made some enemies, perish.

    Atanu

    Great post.

You mentioned Sonia Gandhi and MMS (of course, why wouldn’t you!), but I guess you missed your hero’s comments on SSB. Here I present for your reference.

“He (Sai Baba) was a great man who dedicated his life to provide water and education to the rural areas and medical services to the humanity,” Modi wrote on tweeter.

“In the world of spiritual leaders, he was unique — who without wondering around the world, attracted it towards Indian culture,” he said.

Personally, I have been blessed with his love and grace. I pay my tributes to sacred Sathya Sai Baba on his nirvana,” the chief minister added.

Wonder why all other politicians belong to this “confederacy of criminals” as you put it but not Narendra Modi! Or does he?

    Atanu,

You mean to say you weren’t deeply moved at the sight of Sachin Tendulkar shedding tears near SSB’s body? You must be a white-ass-licking unpatriotic Indian.

  • Santosh

Satya Sai Baba to me is no saint or holy person.

I look at the life of Adi Sankaracharya, Shirdi Sai Baba,Ramakrishna Paramahansa, Sri Ramana Maharishi and current Sankaracharya’s, all of them had/have a very simple lifestyle and are real Brahman’s (Brahmin by occupation not by birth). They led a life of fakir, fearless and unparalleled spiritual teachings.

Sorry Satya Sai Baba better luck in the next janma for a tryst with spiritualism.

You’re one gutsy fellow. I like your blog. What you write here is accurate. But please pick your battles as there are too few like you and too many idiots.

I hope atanu is equally derisive of the superstitious nonsense in BG and the Vedas. A conniving thief who takes it all is more of a thief than one who takes it all from the gullible. Satya Sai Baba was a charlatan no doubt, but no more than the Sankarachariayars et al.

  • laadlabakdaas

Being a moron yourself you are not sitting on a high chair to call other people cheats.

Cheat he may be but certainly is not the kind the politicians and big businessmen (Ambanis, Tata, Marans) are. If anything he used his magic to amass wealth that he re-distributed to poor people (afterall his followers are not the DMK or the Congressmen who keep all the loot to themselves and their family).

Remember this he has a charity that’s helped so many poor students on their way to a college degree and also has helped save many lives in his hospitals.

Its OK to spit crap here on web. So many ppl do it. But being an attention whore is a very bad for health.

  • Amit S

I read one someone’s T-shirt “Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers.” Let me also add, every one of us has our stupid moments. Some have more such moments than others, which makes them, well, stupid.

@Rajan P. Parrikar, you mentioned Sachin Tendulkar shedding a tear on Sathya Sai Baba’s death. Sachin definitely has character and integrity besides being the greatest batsman yet, but that does not guarantee that he will act intelligently all the time. Nor does not being moved by the stupidity of a great compatriot (Sachin) unpatriotic (notice, Atanu didn’t wish ill for India or Indians in general). Nor does it make someone white-ass-licking (notice, there is no hint of irrational white-ass worshipping in Atanu’s post). It only makes you look stupid, and Satya Sai Baba and Sachin ass-licking!

  • Shashank

    @Indianliberals
Atanu is not a PR agent for Modi. He can’t be grilled for everything said by mr.modi

  • Tulsi

I don’t know why people who doesn’t know anything about swami(sathya sai baba) write some nonsense stuff. I would like to ask every one who writes against him 1. have you ever seen him, 2. heard his discourses 3. his projects for poor, he opened many schools, super specialty hospitals. Without knowing just for time pass or for gossip we should not talk any carp! We devotes will never pay attention to these stupid articles. We know him very well nothing can change our minds.

  • Jayant

“Cheat he may be but certainly is not the kind the politicians and big businessmen (Ambanis, Tata, Marans) are.”
Exactly! Only big businessmen are crooks, while those running smaller businesses are saints. Tatas and Ambanis have only founded successful industries and businesses, created wealth, paid taxes and provided employment to a few hundred thousand people. Can you even compare this with the yeoman service that the Baba has done to the humanity by creating vibhuti and gold chains out of thin air?

“afterall his followers are not the DMK or the Congressmen who keep all the loot to themselves and their family”
Atanu, show me one follower of the Baba who is/was a member of Congress or DMK. I dare you!

  • http://www.sudarshan.org Sudarshan Gaikaiwari

Satya Sai Baba was a product of the free market economy. Do you want the government to regulate the god men? All the wealth he accumulated was from an exchange of value with other consenting adults without any coercion. Why do you consider him a bigger fraud than other businessmen?

I was surprised, many tweeters were busy comparing the wretchedness of Baba with that of Teresa and then concluding that it was the former in fact, who was the “lesser evil”. I don’t know what comfort did they derive from such comparison. But I liked the fact that you in your analysis did not try to titrate their evilness.

I was wondering what you might think of Narendra Modi on account of his too supporting some of the Baba-shaabas only because they might be popular, but anyway Indian Liberals raised that point, and also I have an inkling as to what your answer might be. :)

  • RC

Why is it hard for people to understand that Shri Narendra Modi is a politician. He said kind words about SSB because he knows that a lot of fools in his country followed this SSB. Very few from Gujarat really follow SSB but he still made the statement because it is good politics for a any politician with national ambition.
Some morons think that all things “political” are somehow bad.

  • Jagadish

The standard defense against any questioning by SSB devotees is that he built many schools, brought water to the villages and built hospitals. I fully agree he should be credited with these achievements, but pray, tell me, how much did these cost to build and maintain? It is not even a small percentage of the sort of money the SSB people are swimming in.

If SSB trust claims all their activities are charitable, where are the accounts? Who audited them? I’m sure no one will ever know. This is just like some of the other famous players from Bangalore in the godman racket. Nothing is transparent, no one will ever know the true extent of cash inflow and outflow.

  • Sundar

For me, It was interesting to observe SSB in few dimensions:

Spiritual guru: Most followers believed him to be an incarnation of God, despite his fraud, and had some kind of good discipline and positive values in life. We as human beings tend to believe in some kind of super-natural power over us and those who want to see someone in physical form tend to believe the likes of SSB/SSRS.

    Power broker:
He was a kind of lobbyist and super power broker as many of the senior politicians, businessmen and bureaucrats were either his followers or in his payroll. He helped creating all kinds of connections between them and might have earned handsome money, goodwill and power.

    Development agent:
He did develop reasonably good infrastructure facilities and charity hospitals. That was a small part of his overall empire’s expenses. And most of them should have been done by Government institutions.
Recent example is his assistance to line the canal providing water to chennai, Tamilnadu from Krishna river. It was a project conceived and commenced 30 years back and most Andhra politicians looted the funding from State and Central governments and finally completed the canal a decade back. But it was full of leaks and hardly any water was reaching Chennai. SSB funded canal lining work and it helped to get more water to Chennai and he was called a hero for this and he also acquired friendship of TN CM (Karunanidhi). Later Karuna and his minions sought SSB’s funding for cleaning a river full of sewage flow, in Chennai. Knowing Karuna’s ability to loot the entire money, SSB kept quite.

It would be interesting how his trust is run and funds (estimated to be Rs 30,000 crores…) are utilised.

But SSB’s frauds are nothing when compared to 2Gs, Pawars and Spectrum Rajas.

  • http://opinionatedindian.org Opinionated Indian

    Super article.

Agree with your views. I was a follower in my childhood. I was taken to his bhajans near our home. I was invited to a friend’s place when Vibudhi fell from his photo.

That was when I started to question the antics of his followers and his antics. I haven’t believed him after that. Debated with his ardent followers many times and all they produced was his good side when I questioned his shady nature. An article in India Today further gave strength to my belief that he was a gimmicker. It beats me how Sachin is his follower :( (don’t support Sachin on this though).

However, find it interesting how he managed to help so many by building infrastructure and hospitals.
