Even in science the Nobel Prize has been very political. For example Rosalinf Franklin , who did all the hard work for DNA structure was not awarded as they said Nobel Prizes are not given posthumously. Just see the wiki on her.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosalind_Franklin

This is very shameful criteria. The Nobel committee came with a sorry recently for not giving it to MK Gandhi.

Then there is JC Bose who was the real pioneer of wireless , but it was given to Mahachor Marconi.

In recent times, we have had the case of ECG Sudarshan, who did work in theoretical physics , but was not given as the commitee thought the work was not completed by him. It was given to Dr Glauber who has cited ECG Sudarshan's work.

Controversy regarding Nobel Prize
ECG Sudarshan has been overlooked for the Physics Nobel Prize on more than one occasion.

There was a controversy involving Sudarshan and the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2005 too. Several physicists wrote a letter to the Swedish Academy, protesting that Sudarshan should have been awarded a share of the Prize for the Sudarshan diagonal representation (also known as Sudarshan-Glauber representation ) in quantum optics, for which Roy J. Glauber won his share of the prize. The Nobel Committee has often been criticized for allegedly ignoring scientists who did seminal work on a topic while awarding a prize to other scientists for the same topic.[4]

For the first time, Sudarshan himself has broken his silence over the Nobel controversy. Speaking to the Hindustan Times, he expressed frustration at the way he was ignored for top science honours, saying

"The 2005 Nobel prize for Physics was awarded for my work, but I wasn’t the one to get it. Each one of the discoveries that this Nobel was given for were based on my research. Here is it from wikipaedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Sudarshan

"... The irony of the situation is that in spite of all these facts being available in print, the diagonal representation instead of being referred to as the Sudarshan representation is dubbed as either the P-Representation (as if Glauber discovered and named it first) or at best as `Glauber-Sudarshan' Representation. "[5]

About having been denied the Nobel in 1979 as well, Sudarshan said, "Steven Weinberg, Sheldon Glashow and Abdus Salam built on work I had done as a 26-year-old student. If you give a prize for a building, shouldn’t the fellow who built the first floor be given the prize before those who built the second floor?"

For peace instead of Kissinger it should have been given to John Lennon , who with his soft protests in US passed the message very well , culminating in the lyrics of "Imagine"

One should not give much weight to these awards. For as Eric Ambler wrote in " A Coffin for Democritus" " In a dying civilization , political diagnosis is performed the way you have bedside manners. Awards and rewards are decoration of mediocrity by ignorance"

Quo the timesonline link you have provided

"he spectacle of Mr Obama mounting the podium in Oslo to accept a prize that once went to Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi and Mother Theresa would be all the more absurd if it follows a White House decision to send up to 40,000 more US troops to Afghanistan."

I think it is only logical to see Obama on the same podium where Theresa once received the prize. It's all about propaganda.

I wonder if Jawaharlal Nehru has reincarnated himself as Obama. It is too early to judge but the coming times will prove it.
