I think this problem of subsidizing education in India applies to all Universities and Colleges. If you look at Delhi University, they charge about Rs. 8000 in tuition for one year of education! So, an elite student gets to study at the likes of St. Stephens, Hindu, HansRaj, LSR for just Rs. 24000! That is precisely the cost of education for one semester at an IIT. I guess the main goal for the Government should be to hike the fees substantially and then provide Grants/Loans for the needy (which by itself is difficult to determine). This will be similar to the concept of FAFSA in US education system.

Sometimes wonder whether IIT stands for Institute of Indian Technology?
Most (NOT ALL) of the IITians I have met, have been pompous, self-opinionated, disconnected baffoons, with very little useable knowledge.
It's only the severity of the entrance exam that puts the IITs in a different league - thereafter one gets served the usual third rate Indian education.

I think IITs, or for that matter other educational institutions, should be made autonomous for this inter-generational loan transfer solution to work. Lest we will have scandals and all the money will be siphoned off by the leaders. We need to take the Govt out of the picture - because that is where most of the imbeciles live.

Atanu,

1. That the intergenerational loan is different from taxes could also be added. It avoids the middle man who does the "take-from-peter-to-pay-paul" way.

2. The same idea could be used to fund primary education, and a small back-of-the-envelope estimate suggests that it is possible to pull it off, albeit over a larger gap. Is it possible to introduce profit motive too? That is to add a "direct" component in contrast to the indirect benefit of the current scheme in the hope of scaling up.

Look at the kind of role models we choose.

hemamalini (MP btw) recently travelled by train in Tamil Nadu without a ticket. When apprehended by the TTE shamelessly replied:

" My sponsor forgot to hand over the ticket ".

Obviously the filmstar besotted TTE let her travel.

The " eminent speakers " remind of the following faux pas by one such vapid person during an exhibition of Rodin's Sculptures in Birla Academy in Kolkata.

She walked in asking one of the volunteers :

" I would like to be introduced to Mr.Rodin."

Though the self sustaining intergenerational loan payoff sounds interesting,I am worried that such a scheme would provide no incentives for the colleges to keep the fees low an maintain a lean and mean faculty size.
The US student is essentially studying on a loan based system and no wonder the fees are thru the roof and the university has a lot of flab it carries around .
Just a point to ponder.

Pravesh:

You write, "However, blaming IITians squarely for this mess is not entirely true."

I wonder who blamed the IITians for the mess. I certainly did not. Care to clarify, please?

Hello Atanu,

1. Wholeheartedly agree with your points. However, blaming IITians squarely for this mess is not entirely true. It should have been govt. policy and the voted mindedness of our hallowed politicians. Expecting people to pay back unasked items is like living in a world, that does not exist.

2. Your argument is also true for all the other "good" colleges, like IIMs, NIT, Medical colleges, JNU etc.

3. Other point that I dont agree on is the self-absorbed nature of IITians. Probably its true for the initial years, when they are still kids, but the IITian tag seems to loose its shine.

I passed out from IIIT, Hyderabad. Alumni formed has been very recent ( since insti itself established in 1998 ). One of the goals is to provide the loans to the needy students.
Wonder what IITians could do ! :)
