Bihar is my ancestral place, infact, a village near Bodh Gaya and Pava Puri, pilgrimage of Buddhists and Jains. Not to mention Gaya and Rajgir not too far from there. Gaya with the Vishnu temple for "pindadaan", a Hindu holy place and Rajgriha - abode of kings, capital before Pataliputra.

Although visited there many a times in childhood, recently had an opportunity to see ruins of Nalanda, Bodh Gaya, Pava puri for the first time. Begs the question on state of affairs of Bihar today. Begs the question of India in general but Bihar is the epitome of that "what happened here and how?"

After the long series on The Indian Education System, this series on Bihar seems ready to be an even more interesting and enlightening one. Specially, to someone like me, who has never been there but is constantly amazed by the promise and failure (in deliverance) of this state.

Ofcourse, it'd help if the series concentrated more on the social, economic and political aspects and guided in the direction of solutions, rather than contemplating on what all wrong muslims have wrought on holy india and its populace.

And, regarding muslims destroying the buddhist heritage of Bihar, you may be right. But, from the little that I know - long before the muslims, brahminical forces of this country had already destroyed buddhism - the religion - in this country.

Good Article, It begs one answer from our thinkers and rulers.

Have they ever thought of building any university like Nalanda/Vikramshila/Takshashila, which could hosue 10000 students and still offer excellent education.

Everytime, there's a question of increasing seats in premier instituitions, we see the same set of answers, Lack of funds... resources... Alas,
The lack starts with the imagination and spans till exceution, completion.

Awaiting the next article in the series.

I will be eagerly looking forward to the rest of your posts on Bihar. It always raises a difficult question: what potential there is as opposed to what has become.

Ok I get the early bird prize for commenting.

Anyway. Its interesting to see where this discussion goes. AFAIK even after independence for a decade or so, Bihar was far from being the pioneer of BIMARU states. Seeds might have sown by Islamic invaders, but the harvest is our own doing, thanks to Nehru's Red directions.
