If one thinks about technology then there are two things that stands out - standards and constant upgrades. I dont think technology could have spread so rapidly and made our lives much more productive unless there were certain standards that were set. Also, you see a constant improvement/upgradation of these standards on a regular basis. The more I think about it, the more convinced I am getting about developing infrastructure standards in India.

We dont even need to develop our own standards. We can pick and choose from the best. We cant have Urban Infrastructure Renewal Fund (and other such crap) unless we have defined standards for infrastructure development. A renewal fund is a reactive way of addressing things. Its needed right now in India but its still reactive. What we need are infrastructure standards. What else is the Union Ministry for Urban Development supposed to do?

When will Indian cities have someone like Bloomberg? Checkout nyc.gov. There an entire site dedicated to what the city needs to do get ready for the next 1 million people. It's an awesome plan. Can the mayor of Mumbai do the samething? Hell No! Bloomberg is not waiting for Washington. He's doing it his own way. And our "leaders" wait for queue from Delhi before they even go to the loo.

Bangalore was nowhere on India's map a few decades back. It was its centres of learning, the technology based industries that made it an engine of growth. With the right investments, many of India's smaller cities will become the Bangalore and Pune of tomorrow.

Cool. Moot point is that cities bring accessibility and hence improved productivity. Incresed productivity means more growth. Hence more but efficient cities is must especially for a country like India wherein ~70% population is rural. Comments from Shallu, http://www.deccansojourn.com

Atanu, great read and I agree with it. There are too many valid arguments for India to develop some of the second and third tier cities. Cities like Belgaum, Salem, Indore, Nagpur, Lucknow, Vijayawada, Sholapur, Jamshedpur etc can easily develop into better hubs for economy.

Many of these new cities will have the luxury of looking at the hurdles faced at other places and work around them. The politics involved has a huge payoff and the carrot needs to be waived in front of local politicians citing Hyderabad and Chandrababu Naidu as an example.
