Entropy is the only god in this universe. As procreation is a form of recreation the byproduct (progeny) is cheap. Per se this is not a problem (fecund species have a survival rate of less than 1 %). However primate evolution has put a spoke in this wheel. The energy cost of carrying a human foetus to full term is huge. So this abundance of children comes from over exploiting the target geography. While i can wax eloquent on inclusive development etc, the bottom line is that there are too many childern produced by parents who cannot dream of even keeping the kid out of malnutrition, forget fancy stuff like education. The answer too is simple. Stop subsidising food. Our population curve from 1947 to 2007 reads like a bacterial J curve. If we breed like microbes we should be ready to perish like them.

I think the forced sterilization programs of the 70s created a setting, where no party will ever take family planning seriously on their agenda, despite all the rhetoric. Definitely limiting population would have an effect in India, even if it cannot address all the imbalances.
