Can it get any better than this? Listening to Rashid Khan sing “sajan bin bawari bha-i ray” in Gorakh Kalyan on a Sunday morning. No, it does not get any better.

Gorakh Kalyan (like most other ragas of the kalyan thaat) is supposed to be an evening raga, isn’t it?

Of course, it is common for individual preferences regarding raga-samay to vary from the official time of the raga.

Graham: I have not included the album title in the mp3 rip of the track from my CD collection. And as it happens, the CDs are all back in California and I am in India. Apologies for not being able to answer your question.

Karthik: I believe it is a late night raga. But I am chronologically challenged — all I care about is whether it conforms to my mood at the moment. Indeed, the music creates the mood :)

the last time i heard ustad rashid khan shahib was at the sawai gandharva festival… he wasn’t in his best form then… hopefully things will be different the next time i get a chance to hear him live.

on another note… you may have listened to kaushiki chakravarty… after sawai, i heard her sing again in pune yesterday. she’s superb!

Although the raag is called Gorakh Kalyan, it is not from Kalyan thaat, but from Khamaj. Its ascending and descending scale is
    SRMDnS’ SnDMRn.D.S

the nishad is flat; hence, it is from Khmaj thaat and very similar to raag Narayani.

    Just my 2 cents worth
