Thanks for being objective. Whether you are inspired or not, but wish to give transformational process a chance - contact me sanjaydg@rediffmail.com

Your criticism have a certain validity. Your synicism also has a place in egging people to get involved. I applaud your script.

Although your article is quite well written and some points have been well depicted in ur article I want to ask you as to where are u heading with your article.
Are u saying that IITians are a worthless species or at best just add a little value to the establishment, or are you saying that "I am just describing what I saw at the meet"
If the latter is the case then you could have made it more entertaining.
However for former case you should back it up with stats. make it more penetrating.
if neither then plz clarify your main reason for writing it.

So plz clarify...

Reality check Atanu - what did you expect out of the conference? You were not going to hear of original research that took mankind closer to the ultimate truth (or some bars for that matter).

I have never been to a pan-IIT conference but have seen the invitations. Expecting anything besides a networking opportunity is asking for too much.

Interesting write up - not too long at all - since it holds your interest to the end.

It would be also interesting to know what how/whether you thought the conference achieved its objectives, to what extent, and what are likely to be the outcomes ?

An interesting anecdote about IITians.

Does anyone remember the program about the IITs telecast on CBS 60-minutes ? In that program someone said something to the effect of , "IITs are better than Stanford, MIT, Princeton put together". This story was splashed all over the internet. See here for a sample

I was working at a major US corp at that time. The funny thing was the next day a whole bunch of IITians who were applying for a green card printed out these stories and attached it to their GC applications.

You could'nt ask for a better reality check.

Nice diary and cannot wait for the piece on SSRS. If past reactions are any indications, we are in for some fun! While you are in the mood, why not another post on your favorite columnist, Tom 'Flatworld' Friedman? :) How come he wasn't there at the conference?

Seriously though, without a serious agenda for sufficient follow-up, this conference will continue to remain a self-congratulatory shagfest for the alumni.

Great observation about Kalam and his speech. Wonder if anyone has quantified how much it costs the average citizens due to celebrity/politicians going about to cut a ribbon or give a speech in India. The time (supposedly) productive time lost due to delays and all... I am guessing it would be quite high.

Can't wait for the next part. Jai Gurudev!

He Atanu
loved the post :-) I have seen President's complicated powerpoints.. and thanks for being a vocal cynic. Because truth lies in between cynicism and naivety. Despite Kalam's being grandfather, the good thing is he is there, is himself and has a genuine initiative to do good.

I believe the MC was Tom Alter, who apart from his firang roles here and there, has also written a few books, and is quite active in the Mumbai theater scene. His gaffe is very surprising, given his personality.

Eagerly awaiting the next segment.
