atanu,
i was planning to write on the mp .. friends made me aware of his doings/wrongdoings at the university (o.u).. he made quite a splash with the cash starved (the effects of being nine years in the wilderness) congress in the state with his readiness to splurge.. the grapevine says he spent more than 5 crores on his campaign..
from what i can gather, he does fit in with the congress brand of contacts(and hence business)-seeking businessmen-fixer-politicians like.. i can think of two from a.p., (t.subbarami reddi and l.rajgopal)

Atanu,

What is your idea of a modified version of democracy with universal adult franchise? Can you share it?

One of the issues with democractic choice is the oppression of minorities by the brute majorities. Another is the absence of "informed choice" and the need to ensure that information/ propoganda is not manipulated. In the Indian context there are serious issues that need to be addressed. I do not have the faintest idea of how any of these shortcomings can be overcome. Probably you have given it some thought? Also, someone with a deep study of pol. science may have a solution form history or some place else.
