Hi,
I liked this extensive mention of Siddhartha.
Indeed "knowledge is communicable, wisdom is not".

"Education has something to do with learning, which in turn has a relationship with knowledge and understanding." God, this is so true. If only we could get the young generation to realise the implication of this early in life! :)

dear atanu,
another perspective. upon reading and re-reading the book, i have come to often conjecture what siddhartha's journey may have been like had he not denied himself the opportunity to sit at the feet of the buddha. perhaps the realization that dawns on him in the twilight of his life, may have come to him sooner. perhaps not. indeed, this is the open question that the book most decisively puts forward before me. i find it hard to internalize siddhartha's assertion that wisdom cannot be communicated. i interpret this point of view, instead, as arising uniquely out of the specific circumstances of siddhartha's own life. having submitted himself completely to his guru-block, and having paid the price for it (one might argue), he cannot but have a different point of view at the end of his life.
deep

p.s. the 1972(?) film suffers the handicap of trying to convey the psychological essence of siddhartha's evolution within the constraining boundaries of spoken dialogue. but the film stands out for its breathtaking images, which give it an expansiveness of visual quality that one cannot get from reading the book alone.

...And somehow it is the half knowledge, that is captured by the brain from the past experiences, that acts against the complete knowledge.

Words and thoughts - how inadequate they are for expressing essence.Only one dimension, as they say. Infact going with this reasoning one can see why religions are misinterpreted with wrong consequences.

Thanks for putting up the text from the above book. It was an enjoyable read.
